When we think of change, different images come to mind. Something exciting. Something scary. Maybe simply… the inevitable.
When we intentionally try to create positive change in our lives — when we’re really putting in the effort — we often picture progress like a gentle uphill climb. Steady. Predictable. Encouraging.
Or maybe like a staircase — confident strides upward, a small plateau, then continued movement forward.
But in reality?
Positive change often looks more like the stock market. Jagged. Up and down. Forward, backward, sideways. An overall climb upward — but with plenty of bumps and missteps along the way.
And that reality can feel discouraging.
As a society, we’ve conditioned ourselves to expect immediate results. Fast food. Instant streaming. Endless scrolling. Search engines that deliver answers in seconds.
But human growth doesn’t work that way.
Real change takes time.
Whether we’re teaching our children life lessons and watching their behavior slowly evolve… or trying to build a new habit ourselves and slipping along the way… it’s hard to see progress when we’re in the messy middle.
Here are a few thoughts to keep in mind when working toward meaningful change:
Give Grace
Give grace to yourself.
Give grace to others.
When you mess up, don’t beat yourself up. The world does enough of that already. Acknowledge the reality:
“Well, that didn’t go how I hoped.”
Then move forward. Around every corner is another opportunity to try again. Don’t let one mistake derail your entire journey.
When your kids mess up, remember how you were at that age. Share the reality of their choice — even consequences if needed — but follow it with confidence.
“I know you can do the right thing. You have a talent for ____. You can do it here too.”
Don’t lower the bar. Meet them where they are — and help them rise to it.
Remember the WHY
When motivation fades or consistency feels exhausting, come back to your why.
Why does this habit matter?
Why does this boundary matter?
Why does this lesson matter?
Let your “why” answer your doubts.
The same is true in parenting. When it feels easier to let something slide, ask:
Will addressing this now help them become a capable, healthy adult later?
If the answer is yes… it’s worth the effort (in age-appropriate ways, of course 😉).
Your why is one of your most powerful tools.
Find Tools and Systems That Work for You
Progress accelerates when you have the right tools.
Sometimes it’s a simple life hack that boosts productivity.
Sometimes it’s a daily que that reinforces a new habit.
Sometimes it’s a system that keeps you grounded when emotions run high.
To me, one of the most powerful tools is understanding your Personality Type. How you see and approach the world around you.
When you understand how you’re wired — your strengths, stress patterns, decision-making style, and organizing tendencies — you stop asking, “What’s wrong with me?” and start asking, “How can I work with who I am?”
That’s where we can help.
We offer two FREE resources to support you:
1. Take the Quiz: Discover your personality type through a simple assessment. You’ll learn about your interaction style, decision-making process, and how you naturally approach tasks.
2. Learn More: After taking the quiz, screenshot your results to remember them and then explore your specific personality type on our informational webpage featuring all 16 types. You’ll gain deeper insight into your strengths, growth areas, career tendencies, and relationship dynamics.
Understanding yourself changes how you approach growth.
Celebrate the Wins
Big or small — celebrate them.
Walked for 10 minutes instead of scrolling?
WIN.
Paused 30 extra seconds to listen to your child before lecturing?
WIN.
Required a “try bite” before giving in to whatever they wanted in order to avoid starvation?
WIN.
Skipped the gossip and shared gratitude instead?
WIN.
When we celebrate wins, we train our minds to notice progress.
We anchor ourselves in gratitude.
And gratitude fuels resilience.
Change is rarely smooth.
But it is absolutely possible.
We’re all in the same boat — doing our best to move forward, one imperfect step at a time.
And you don’t have to do it alone.
At ColorWorks, we believe everyone is capable of positive growth. Understanding your personality type gives you a powerful starting-point advantage — and understanding others allows you to meet them where they are and move forward together.
If you’re ready to grow with greater clarity and confidence, we’d be honored to support you.
With gratitude,
Cait
